Modern Federal, State, And Local Governments - 1298 Words

Modern federal, state, and local governments must deal with changes in technology and changes in society and culture. One emerging technology is the proliferation of drone technology in the hands of private citizens. Christ Pritchard, writing in Journal Of The Australian New Zealand Institute Of Insurance Finance, suggests that â€Å"[c]urrent usage patterns show it’s a safe bet that drones are destined to play an increasingly important role in business relationships† (Pritchard, 2015). Once solely in the hands of professional organizations and government activities, drone technology is now more available to hobbyists and casual users. The role of local government, and by extension public administrators, is always under review by its citizens. Because the job of government is to â€Å"legislate and make decisions in areas over which they have legislative authority† (VMA, 2012) and to develop and implement policy, local governments must be able to react to emerging technologies and provide a safe environment for its citizens. Drones Here and Now In January 2014, the done technology was still emerging as a high-dollar endeavor for government agencies and wealthy hobbyists. Two years later, an advanced drone can be purchased online with overnight delivery from hundreds of different websites. Australian Energy Production Wind Energy Essays - 601 Words

Coal is currently one of the biggest issues facing Australia as it producing too much fossil fuel. As stated by Todd woody, Wind turbines are sourcing 30 percent of Australia’s energy production, and today is one leading renewable energy projects the country it self has to offer, this statement I believe is overly correct and is why I believe that wind turbines are a lot more environmentally friendly than coal burning. Current efforts to minimize global warming are based on the expectation that the people across the globe will agree to and toward a sustainable and eco friendly future. The aim is to improve the balance between coal emissions and fossil fuels. As you may already know the government is working on a program called RET†¦show more content†¦In over 20 years of electricity generation with more than 100,000 machines installed worldwide, no member of the public has ever been injured during the operation of a wind turbine. These stats recorded show that the win d turbines are very safe and have a good reputation. With a total of 513,954 homes across the gold coast a wind turbine farm would be the most appropriate power source to fuel all the homes across the gold coast. With each wind turbine tower producing aproxamently 3.5 mega watts a day one turbine can power up to 2500 homes (Siemens Energy). To power the gold coast you need only 412 turbines, which is a very energy efficient source, with the wind average of 13 knots a day (statistics by Australian Government. Bureau of Meteorology) these turbines can still produce up to 1.5 mega watts a day. As stated above wind turbines are a very efficient source of energy production, with one turbine powering up to 1250 homes across the gold coast. The average cost of a wind turbine is around about 3-4 million dollars, which is reasonably cheap because it powers many houses. It is also cheap for a power bill because it is usually less than 1-cent per kill watt. These costs off wind power could lower your power bill up to 60%, which will allow you to spend your money on other things and not on electrical bills. If this program goes underway everyone will be saving money and not losing it to dear electrical bills. Defining Emotional and Behavioral Disorders Free Essays

In order to move forward clinically or in research to address the problem of emotional and behavior disorders one must first have a solid definitive grasp on the nature of the problem and what it ultimately is, definitionally. Unfortunately, there’s no universally accepted definition for emotional and behavioral disorders. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) defines the disorder as followers: â€Å"a condition exhibiting one or more of the following characteristics over a long period of time and to a marked degree, which adversely affects educational performance: An inability to learn which cannot be explained by intellectual, sensory, or health factors. We will write a custom essay sample on Defining Emotional and Behavioral Disorders or any similar topic only for you Order Now An inability to build or maintain satisfactory interpersonal relationships with peers and teachers. Inappropriate types of behavior or feelings under normal circumstances. A general pervasive mood of unhappiness or depression. A tendency to develop physical symptoms or fears associated with personal or school problems† (Council for exceptional, 2011). The federal definition also includes those children who have been diagnosed with schizophrenia, but excludes children who are socially maladjusted unless they are seriously emotionally disturbed (Ibid). Gargiulo points out that although research continue to argue over a concrete definition of emotional and behavioral disorders, there are some common denominator/factors in the various definitions. He indicates four key factors that an individual must exhibit that will contribute to diagnosis of emotional and behavioral disorder. 1. There must be a high frequency (or rate) at which the behavior occurs. 2. The high intensity of the behavior. 3. The length or duration of the behavior. And 4. The age appropriateness of the behavior (Gargiulo, 2006). The terms emotional and behavioral disorders, mental disorders, emotional disturbance, behavioral disorders, and mental illness are all umbrella terms that are often used interchangeably in the field and in the literature. Beneath these terms, there is a wide range of specific conditions all different from one another in their characteristics and in their treatment (National dissemination center, 2010). Some examples of Emotional and Behavioral Disorders are, adjustment disorder, anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, selective mutism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder, anorexia nervosa disorder, bipolar/manic depressive disorder, major depressive disorder, and anxiety disorder. Pratt, Arts of the Contact Zone Essay Example For Students

Pratt, Arts of the Contact Zone Essay Understanding Pratt After talking to students in classroom vivo were assigned to do a project on Pratt, getting a frequent response l didnt read it, its too hard to comprehend was an ordinary thing. Therefore, writing a response to Pratt essay in a language that is comprehensible by regular people Can be Very helpful to those struggling students. In Arts of the Contact Zone Pratt discusses the mix of two different cultures in one area. Where one person is born and lives in a contact zone he/she is surrounded by two different conflicting cultures, and there are NON different languages. She also introduces us With a new word ethnographys, which means the way in which subordinate peoples present themselves in ways that their dominants have represented them. Therefore, ethnographys is not self-representation, but a collaboration of mixed ideas and values form both the dominant and subordinate cultures. Pratt provides many examples of ethnographys throughout her essay, including two texts by Gunman Pomp and her son, Manuel. Although very different in setting, ideas, and time periods, they both accomplish the difficult goal of cross-cultural immunization. When two cultures collide in the same area often if not always a conflict occurs. The conflict is that one of the cultures is dominant and the other subordinate, where one holds power over the other. And in which the oppressive culture defines what is legit and lawful. Pratt argues that these factors are only imaginary, and these factors only remove them from the conception of the actual living community. She defines transfiguration as to describe processes whereby members of subordinated or marginal groups select and invent from materials transmitted by a dominant of metropolitan culture (peg. 05), Pratt is also trying to define that it is an error to assume that all people in a community must share the same language, motives and beliefs. These are the beliefs of the culture that is dominating; however, in reality this community is marginalia and nobody is being recognized by the Whole. Even though those marginalia communities are recognized as superior, multiculturalism is a necess ity as it allows for culture to drift through universities and politics to represent them in the world. In 1613 Gunman Pomp, an Andean who claimed righteous Inca fall, wrote a twelve hundred page long letter to King Philip Ill of Spain. This letter was unique because it was written in bono languages, Spanish and Quiches, the native language of the Andean. Quiches was not thought of as a written language, nor Andean culture as a literatures (peg. 584). However Pomps letter proved this theory wrong. Somehow, Pomp succeeded in interacting with the Spanish in a contact zone, which is a social space where cultures meet, clash, and grapple with each other (peg. 4). This contact zone forced pomp to learn the Spanish language and culture and use it to his advantage. With this knowledge Pomp wrote a letter in which he combined Andean values with European manners and ideas, which is a clear example of the idea of cross-cultural communication. Unfortunately, his work never reached its intended recipient, for unknown reasons; therefore, did not get recognized until after a few hundred years later. Pomp constructs his text by appropriating and adapting pieces of the representational repertoire of the invaders 589). He presents Spaniards as greedy and foolish people, and says they brought nothing in value but guns and armor With the desire for gold and silver_ He uses transmutable characters to represent Spanish greediness not only in the written text, but also in images. Those images represent Inca way Of life, as well as the greedy nature of the Spanish. Gunman Pomp uses European style in his drawings, but uses Andean way Of symbolism. Andean use height to represent persons power and authority in society. .ubca9b0173aa095121bdbe0bf0a50aae1 , .ubca9b0173aa095121bdbe0bf0a50aae1 .postImageUrl , .ubca9b0173aa095121bdbe0bf0a50aae1 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ubca9b0173aa095121bdbe0bf0a50aae1 , .ubca9b0173aa095121bdbe0bf0a50aae1:hover , .ubca9b0173aa095121bdbe0bf0a50aae1:visited , .ubca9b0173aa095121bdbe0bf0a50aae1:active { border:0!important; } .ubca9b0173aa095121bdbe0bf0a50aae1 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ubca9b0173aa095121bdbe0bf0a50aae1 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ubca9b0173aa095121bdbe0bf0a50aae1:active , .ubca9b0173aa095121bdbe0bf0a50aae1:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ubca9b0173aa095121bdbe0bf0a50aae1 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ubca9b0173aa095121bdbe0bf0a50aae1 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ubca9b0173aa095121bdbe0bf0a50aae1 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ubca9b0173aa095121bdbe0bf0a50aae1 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ubca9b0173aa095121bdbe0bf0a50aae1:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ubca9b0173aa095121bdbe0bf0a50aae1 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ubca9b0173aa095121bdbe0bf0a50aae1 .ubca9b0173aa095121bdbe0bf0a50aae1-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ubca9b0173aa095121bdbe0bf0a50aae1:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: John Cabot Analysis EssayIn one of his images, he mocks Spanish when he draws a Spaniard on the same level with an Andean, knowing that Spanish think of themselves as the dominant culture. Pomps drawings use the ethnographys to highlight the transmutable symbolism and nature of his letter, Gunman Pomps letter to the king of Spain is not the only way Pratt uses ethnographers text. She uses her sons experiences in grammar school to represent the relationship between cross-cultural communication and the communication between the teacher and the student. Pratt describes this relationship as a contact zone, where two cultures clash in one area (the classroom) and where there is a dominant culture (teacher) and subordinate ultra (student), Just like V-Eire explains the banking concept of education where the student is expected to obey the oppressor, while he or she is making the deposits in students minds, Pratt is using Arts of the Contact Zones to represent this relationship. Where the teacher gives out a task and the student must obey the command in order to do better in school. Prates son, Manuals teacher gives them homework to write a paragraph using single-sentence responses to a few questions. However, Manuel is unwilling to be oppressed, and he tries to resist the assignment in an innovative way. He is expected to identify With the interests Of those in power over him-parents, teachers, doctors, public authorities (peg. 592) but he mocks this assignment in his mockery can be noticed in the very beginning Of his paragraph, the title. He spells it A Grate Advancement and he does that not because he is a bad speller, but because of his intent to defy the authority figure, his teacher. Manuel is using the concept of ethnographys in this situation. Even though nearly every word was misspelled, his teacher awarded him a good grade, as if he is correctly completed the assigned task. The humor of it was not recognized, It could have been that his teacher did not truly see Manuals point or that his teacher could have totally ignored his humor altogether. No recognition was available, however, of the humor, the attempt to be critical or compensatory, to parody the structures of authority (593), Manuals goal was not accomplished, although he did do better than Gunman Pomp. His pieces reached the intended recipient, but with no success, Both outcomes were, in essence, the same, Prates essay, or speech, is, in itself, an example of an ethnographically text. Although many people think hat she is writing from a dominant perspe ctive, she is actually writing from the subordinate point of view. Her intellectual use affords and ideas tend to mislead even the greatest of minds. Because her piece initially intended for her fellow writers and colleagues, who are on the same level of literature and writing skills as she is, many students have a hard time interpreting her. In her speech, Pratt is trying to explain ethnography and how it applies to everyday life. In her speech, Pratt is not trying to win over an audience or sell her ideas. Rather, she is trying to explain ethnographys. Pratt hopes that her audience understands ethnographer by providing us with examples. She does a better job than Gunman Pomp and her son. And how it applies to everyday life through the eyes Of the minority. This is how her text becomes ethnographers. She places herself in the eyes of the dominant. Aspiring towards better luck than Gunman Pomp and her son, Pratt hopes that her audience understands ethnographys and its applications. Through the use of examples, Pratt is able to reveal the communicative arts of the contact zone, focusing especially on ethnographys. Ethnographys is how people scribe themselves as others view them, and not necessarily how they view themselves. .u58fc05f7dbb83ecbb1a52d5d309f2252 , .u58fc05f7dbb83ecbb1a52d5d309f2252 .postImageUrl , .u58fc05f7dbb83ecbb1a52d5d309f2252 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u58fc05f7dbb83ecbb1a52d5d309f2252 , .u58fc05f7dbb83ecbb1a52d5d309f2252:hover , .u58fc05f7dbb83ecbb1a52d5d309f2252:visited , .u58fc05f7dbb83ecbb1a52d5d309f2252:active { border:0!important; } .u58fc05f7dbb83ecbb1a52d5d309f2252 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u58fc05f7dbb83ecbb1a52d5d309f2252 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u58fc05f7dbb83ecbb1a52d5d309f2252:active , .u58fc05f7dbb83ecbb1a52d5d309f2252:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u58fc05f7dbb83ecbb1a52d5d309f2252 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u58fc05f7dbb83ecbb1a52d5d309f2252 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u58fc05f7dbb83ecbb1a52d5d309f2252 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u58fc05f7dbb83ecbb1a52d5d309f2252 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u58fc05f7dbb83ecbb1a52d5d309f2252:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u58fc05f7dbb83ecbb1a52d5d309f2252 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u58fc05f7dbb83ecbb1a52d5d309f2252 .u58fc05f7dbb83ecbb1a52d5d309f2252-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u58fc05f7dbb83ecbb1a52d5d309f2252:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Dr. Jekyll And Mr Hyde (2365 words) EssayThe examples Pratt mentions demonstrate issues of interaction and communication with all peoples of the world, whether past or present, near or far. Gunman pomp and Manuel, two very different people from very different time periods, will always be in connection with one another because they share being a part of the subordinate group in a dominant-subordinate relationship. Ethnographers texts do not address and affect just one side of that relationship, but both sides, Pratt proves this idea in her piece.

A Farewell To Arms - A Love Story Essays - English-language Films

A Farewell To Arms - A Love Story Essays - English-language Films A Farewell to Arms - A Love Story A Farewell to Arms, by Ernest Hemingway, is a typical love story. A Romeo and his Juliet placed against the odds. In this novel, Romeo is Frederick Henry and Juliet is Catherine Barkley. Their love affair must survive the obstacles of World War I. The background of war-torn Italy adds to the tragedy of the love story. The war affects the emotions and values of each character. The love between Catherine and Frederick must outlast long separations, life-threatening war-time situations, and the uncertainty of each other's whereabouts or condition. This novel is a beautiful love story of two people who need each other in a period of upheaval. Frederick Henry is an American who serves as a lieutenant in the Italian army to a group of ambulance drivers. Hemingway portrays Frederick as a lost man searching for order and value in his life. Frederick disagrees with the war he is fighting. It is too chaotic and immoral for him to rationalize its cause. He fights anyway, because the army puts some form of discipline in his life. At the start of the novel, Frederick drinks and travels from one house of prostitution to another and yet he is discontent because his life is very unsettled. He befriends a priest because he admires the fact that the priest lives his life by a set of values that give him an orderly lifestyle. Further into the novel, Frederick becomes involved with Catherine Barkley. He slowly falls in love with her and, in his love for her, he finds commitment. Their relationship brings some order and value to his life. Compared to this new form of order in his life, Frederick sees the losing Italian army as total chaos and disorder where he had previously seen discipline and control. He can no longer remain a part of something that is so disorderly and so, he deserts the Italian army. Frederick's desertion from the Italian army is the turning point of the novel. This is the significance of the title, A Farewell to Arms. When Frederick puts aside his involvement in the war, he realizes that Catherine is the order and value in his life and that he does not need anything else to give meaning to his life. At the conclusion of this novel, Frederick realizes that he cannot base his life on another person or thing because, ultimately, they will leave or disappoint him. He realizes that the order and values necessary to face the world must come from within himself. Catherine Barkley is an English volunteer nurse who serves in Italy. She is considered very experienced when it comes to love and loss since she has already been confronted with the death of a loved one when her fiance was killed earlier in the war. The reader is not as well acquainted with Catherine's inner thoughts and feelings as we are with those of Frederick. The story is told through Frederick's eyes and the reader only meets Catherine through the dialogue between her and Frederick or through his personal interpretations of her actions. Catherine already possesses the knowledge that her own life cannot be dependent on another. She learned this lesson through the death of her fiance. Her love for Frederick is what her life revolves around, yet she knows not to rely on him to be the order in her life. Had she been dependent on Frederick for the order in her life, she would not have been able to allow him to participate in the war for fear of losing her own stability with his death. The theme that Hemingway emphasizes throughout the novel is the search for order in a chaotic world. Hemingway conveys this through Frederick's own personal search during the chaos of World War I. Catherine has found strength within herself to lead her through life. This is what Frederick must come to realize. Through his involvement with Catherine, Frederick slowly finds his own inner strength. Frederick's affair with Catherine prompts him to leave his wild life of prostitutes and drink. He becomes aware of an element of stability in their affair and realizes that the war that he was involved in was
